Work progressing on Deerfield Parkway railroad crossing

The reconstruction of the railroad crossing on Deerfield Parkway between Weiland Road and Busch Parkway appears to be on track to be completed as scheduled by the end of this week.  The crossing has been closed since Friday, Aug. 12.

Platform work set for Metra station

There's no way to explain this.  According to a sign posted at the Buffalo Grove Metra station on Deerfield Parkway:  "Beginning Saturday, August 20, 2016, the south half of platform 2 will be out of service for rehabilitation for approximately 7 weeks.  Please use the north crosswalk to access the in service portion of platform 2.   After completion of the south half of platform 2, the north half will be out of service for approximately 7 weeks to complete the rehabilitation of platform 2.  Metra will update this station with additional information as it becomes available.  We apologize for any inconvenience."

Why thank you, thank you very much.  But really four months-plus for a platform?

In case you didn't know...

The village wants you to know that its little scholars are going back to school.  In fact, some of them have started.

The Buffalo Grove school start dates are:
*  District 102: August 17
*  District 96: August 17
*  District 214 (Buffalo Grove High School): August 22
*  District 125 (Stevenson High School)

*  District 21:  Aug. 22 (grades 1-8), Aug. 23 (kindergarten and pre-K)

The Police Department will, according to the village, be vigilant about traffic violations in school zones.  In addition to posting signs, the Traffic Unit will focus its attention on speeding and distracted drivers in school zones.

Between 3 and  7 p.m.,  more children pedestrians are struck by vehicles than any other time of the school day. According to AAA, of the children who were struck by vehicles during those time periods in 2015, 11,000 were injured, and more than 300 are killed, on average.

A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a vehicle traveling 10 mph faster. The Buffalo Grove Police Department reminds drivers to slow down, obey crossing guards and watch for flashing bus lights.
